Key Largo is the first of the Fabulous Florida Keys and Dive Capital of the World, home to the world's largest artificial reef, the Spiegel Grove, and home to what we call: Sunset Oasis. It’s not just a name, it truly is an oasis with beautiful sunsets. The views and amenities at Moon Bay and Sunset Oasis rival many expensive luxury resort hotels, yet it maintains the true friendly Florida Keys laid-back atmosphere we have become famous for. Whether it’s fishing, boating, diving, snorkeling, sightseeing, or just relaxing, this place is hard to beat. Located along Blackwater Sound, it’s just minutes (by foot, boat, or car) to some of the best restaurants, Tiki bars, fishing, diving, and snorkeling in the world. In addition, you’re just minutes from John Pennekamp Park and other world famous attractions!
The Moon Bay swimming pool is located in the center of everything and has warm, crystal clear water. Saltwater swimming is also available in the warm clear water of Blackwater Sound off of our docks and beyond our marina. There is plenty of deck area for relaxing and sun bathing around the pool. Remember the pool and sun deck are just a few steps from townhouse #4.
Bring your own boat or personal watercraft. If you don't have a boat or personal water craft, you can rent one nearby by the hour or day. You can charter fishing trips, dive trips or go out on your choice of glass bottom boats or dinner cruises. Water skiing, wake boarding, tubing, sailing and windsurfing are a perfect way to play in the waters in Blackwater Sound.
Fishing in the Keys is among the best in the world. In Key Largo, the Gulf Stream is just offshore, so you don’t have to travel far to find the fish. And, when it’s too rough on the ocean, you can move over to the Florida Bay side and fish in much calmer water. There are quite a few sport-fishing charters in the area. You can stop at marinas or bait and tackle shops to get the information you need. It’s easy to find a good captain who knows where to find the fish and a crew who will put all their attention on you and the fish you are catching. For those who want to really get into nature, backcountry fishing in Florida Bay may be for you. This is fly-fishing at its finest, and you really can’t beat the feeling of outsmarting a cautious and sly Bonefish, Tarpon or Permit. There is plenty of open water, and all kinds of breathtaking sights to see. World renowned Florida Keys fishing is at your fingertips, whether you want to go for Grouper, Mahi-Mahi (Dolphin), Tuna, Permit, Snapper, Tarpon, etc.. You can fish right off the dock at Moon Bay, go back country fishing, offshore trolling or deep water fishing in the Gulf Stream. Most fishing charters will provide all gear and tackle needed. If you want to purchase gear, it is readily available at many local bait and tackle shops, West Marine and even K-Mart.
Key Largo is known as the dive capital of the world! Dive the largest living reef and marine sanctuary in the hemisphere! Dive in the first underwater park and preserve in the world - Pennekamp Park! Dive on the Spiegel Grove (the largest ship ever intentionally sunken to become a dive destination and reef) and many other wrecks and dive spots! Bring your own boat or rent one nearby (within walking distance) by the hour or the day, or go out on any one of the dozens of charters. Dive sites are available for everyone from the first-time beginners to advanced technical and specialty divers. Dive instructors, guides, and charters are available throughout the Keys, and as close as next door at Amy Slate's. You can learn to scuba dive in a single morning or afternoon resort course. You may choose to take advanced training or specialty instruction while in the Keys.
Two tennis courts, which are due to be refurbished soon, are located on the Moon Bay property at the base of the A-building.
There are plenty of restaurants within ten minutes of Moon Bay. You can even walk to Jimmy Johnson’s Big Chill, Senor Frijoles, and Sundowners. As you might expect, there is excellent fresh seafood here in the Keys! Several restaurants are accessible by boat featuring their own dock for a unique lunch or evening out.
Sunset Oasis at Moon Bay is perfectly located for daily viewing of the beautiful sunsets. About an hour before sunset you will see people starting to gather in any of the many great viewing spots. Depending upon the time of the year, the screened porch at Sunset Oasis will probably be your first choice. If you prefer a different view, it’s just a few steps to the community center, Tiki Hut, or marina docks.
